Filler Q & A

What is filler?

A dermal filler is an injectable that increases the volume in different parts of your face according to your needs. Most fillers are a lab-made duplicate of hyaluronic acid, something your body makes naturally.

Hyaluronic acid binds with water, which hydrates and plumps the skin. But, hyaluronic acid levels decrease as you age. That leads to facial folds, thinning lips, and sagging skin.

Fillers can replace your lost hyaluronic acid with its molecular duplicate, which fills in the areas of volume loss in a natural way.

What areas of the face can dermal fillers treat?

Fillers can treat almost any part of your face in which volume loss occurs. That includes:

Nasolabial folds

The nasolabial folds begin at your nostrils and go down to the corners of your lips. That area is usually the first part of the face to show signs of volume loss as you age.

Cheeks

Cheeks naturally have plenty of volume, so when that volume wanes with age, it can result in a hollow or sunken appearance.

Lips

Lips can become thinner over time. They also typically develop fine lines as you age. Some people are born with smaller or thinner lips. Dermal fillers can help plump and define lips in both cases.

Fillers may treat volume loss in other areas, so don't hesitate to ask your Smile & Co. At The Landing specialist about treatment options for all the areas you're concerned about.

When do dermal fillers take effect?

Dermal fillers take effect instantly. The initial results are slightly exaggerated due to mild swelling. The filler settles and softens gradually, and you'll generally see the optimal results in less than two weeks.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Dermal fillers can last from 6-24 months. There are many formulas, each best suited for a specific part of the face.

Fillers in the most stable (least movable) part of your face — the cheeks — last for as long as 24 months while fillers in the areas that move constantly, like your lips, usually have a 6-12 month longevity.

Are fillers better than Botox?

Fillers and Botox® are equally effective, but they treat different issues. While a dermal filler boosts volume, Botox relaxes muscles. Generally, Botox is the best option for lines and wrinkles in the eyes and above, while dermal fillers are ideal for below the eyes.
